How To Develop Employee Motivation. Part 1.

From the desk of Anthony Buchalka

Our motivation plays a crucial role in our success so it's no surprise then that our employee's level of motivation can have a major impact of the success or failure of our business endeavors.

I'm Anthony Buchalka and welcome to this one of many articles on motivation.

Employee Motivation

When it comes to the work place, employee motivation is not always high. Sometimes, people do just enough work, the minimum, to get by and not get fired or laid off. What that ultimately means is that the office or business may not be functioning to full capacity. This may be losing you thousands of potential profits.

Picture this scenario.

When you walk around the office what do you see? If there are several people who seem to be surfing the internet, falling asleep at their desks, talking on the phone about personal matters, or playing computer games, it could be that a good number of people in the office lack motivation.

Causes of Poor Motivation

There are several things that can cause poor employee motivation. In fact, there can be several factors in play at once. For example, if the office or work place is involved with a project that never seems to go anywhere, that could cause motivation to be low. Other factors include an unpleasant working environment, poor conditions, low pay, burnout, bullying, and poor management practices.

Motivation and Morale

Employee motivation and office morale often work together. If morale is high then employee motivation will be high. If morale is low, motivation is likely low. In a lot of ways, it is up to the management to be sensitive to the issues surrounding motivation and morale. If they are sensitive to it, they are then in a much better position to fix any problems before things get bad.

Dealing with Burnout

Burnout is another major problem when it comes to employee motivation. There are several reasons that an employee can experience burnout. Sometimes, people simply get tired of their jobs due to many reasons. Or, they could simply want to go down a different career path. No matter what the reason is, burnout is something that needs to be addressed and dealt with.

Increasing Employee Motivation

If you are in management, it is your responsibility to help keep employees motivated. They need to feel as if they are 'part of the team' and part of something that is interesting and exciting even if the job itself is not very exciting. To help make employees more motivated you could offer performance incentives or increase morale by holding company sponsored functions. Also allowing your employees to be more involved in decision making if possible.

Motivating Yourself

If you are not in management, there are things you can do to help enhance your own level of motivation. These include setting goals and taking action if you are truly unhappy at your job. You may want to talk to your manager or boss to address any issues you may be having.

Final Thoughts

Employee motivation is something that needs to be maintained by the managers. If someone is excited to do their job, their motivation and thus their work output will also be high. If they are not excited, motivation and their work quality and output will usually also be low. Employees can assist in motivating themselves and managers can help boost morale and motivation by doing a variety of things such as giving performance incentives. If you feel as if your motivation is low, talk to your boss to see if anything can be done.

Hope that offered some insight to employee motivation. I will be building on this introduction soon.

Until then.

warmly,
