Powerful Reasons To Consider Keeping a Journal

Thanks for joining me as we have a chat about the usefulness of keeping a journal.

Why Keep a Journal

Well, there are several different ways to keep a journal. Some like to catalog the events that happen in their day. Others like to keep a journal while traveling. Still, some like to use their journals as a way to get in touch with their feelings. And those are just a few examples. There is no wrong way to complete your journal writing.

A writing journal is a good tool when it comes to getting in touch with your inner self. But not all daily journal writing needs to include “writing” per say. Some like to draw pictures, paste articles and artifacts, and put snapshots in their journal. There are many different ways on how to write a journal or diary and there is no wrong way.

Benefits of Journal Writing

Journal writing holds some tremendous benefits, especially when it comes to setting goals. For example, those who have a goal to lose weight will benefit from keeping a diet and exercise journal. Business owners can increase their time management skills by keeping a journal that logs what they did in their day.

A writing journal is used by many writers to help them increase their skills. Journals are a great way to help identify patterns of behavior so you can build and improve upon them.

Set a Goal

Before starting your journal, take some time to think about what it is you would like the journal to accomplish. Do you simply want a place to share your feelings? Do you want to use the journal to help you lose weight? Write your goals for your journal on the first page.

This will give you clarity and focus and let you get the most out of the experience. Daily journal writing is ideal because the more often you do it, the quicker you will get something out of the exercise. But of course, you should set a goal that is doable. If writing in your diary each day is too stressful then it is not something you should strive for, for example.

Write Often

When considering how to write a journal, know that even the prettiest looking journal won’t mean anything unless you use it. A journal won’t do you any good unless you write in it often. It is hard to identify patterns of behavior if you only write one entry a month. When identifying your goals for the journal, also define how often you want to write in it.

For example, if you want to use the journal to log business activities, the journal needs to be updated at least daily. And, if you are using a writing journal to help you be a better writer, daily journal writing will help increase your skills quicker.

Don’t Try Too Hard

One reason why people fail to reach their journal writing potential is because they try too hard to make each entry sound perfect. Journals are informal and you will likely be the only one to look in it. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar if it will slow you down.

One of the benefits of journal writing is that it actually helps you tap into your subconscious mind, a benefit especially if you are using the journal to enhance your creativity. There is no right or wrong way on how to write a journal or diary. If you try too hard to live up to your personal expectation of what you think keeping a journal should mean, then you are missing out on the beauty of the process.

Choose Your Journal

So much of the journal writing process is visual. This includes the way your hand writing looks on the pages, the way you feel when you look at its pages. That is why when keeping a writing journal, it is important to choose the journal style that will suit you the best. You want to do your daily journal writing in something that inspires you. If you choose a journal based on how much it costs but you don’t like the color, you will not be inspired enough to write in your diary or journal every day.

Journal or Diary?

Some people make the distinction between journal writing and a diary and others think they are the same thing. A diary, however, has the connotation that you will be using it to talk specifically about your life and your secrets whereas a journal can take on a few different forms depending on what you want to do with it. When deciding on how to write a journal, you should understand what your purpose is. Journal is a general term and diary is more specific. Either way, journal writing is something that you define. No one can tell you that there is a wrong or write way to complete your daily journal writing or daily diary writing.

So as you can have seen, journal writing holds some tremendous benefits, especially when it comes to setting goals.

I will be back with some more tips soon.

Take care.

All the best.
